Four years of work paying off

Fallen Earth Beta is over and seems to have gone well. We blew it out last night with a huge slaughter of just about everyone. Folks had a good time. It didn't really hit me until last night that the game is finally coming out. It's been a very long road, but likely I've had many excellent people on the trip with me.

Myself and several of my cohorts will be in Seattle this weekend for PAX. Should be interesting. Some of my other cohorts will be at Dragon*Con throwing a Fallen Earth party, so you should find them and get an invite.

So I will be heading down to Atlanta this coming Friday, getting their around 3-4 with a possible stop by Athens if folks there are so inclined. I will be returning to Raleigh Monday afternoon. Saturday afternoon and evening are spoken for, but am up for whatever social activities are happening aside from those times.

Looking for a new laptop

My laptop was ever so kind to inform me that it is on its last legs this evening, thus I am in the market for a new laptop. I don't need anything hugely powerful, but if it could run FE that would definitely be a bonus. I'm thinking of getting a Dell since my last four computers have been Dells and this laptop's impending death is the first real problem I've had with them. Anyone have any suggestions other than Dell for places to look at?

Just be clear I'm not interested in getting a Mac.

It's run by Fred Hicks (of Spirit of the Century Fame) and my old friend Justin Jacobson (the mastermind for Dawning Star). They basically pay me to write a pulp-horror version of 4E content with giant, talking monkeys. Can this be any more up my alley?

No, no it can't.)

I am sick and most likely will not be in the office tomorrow or get my planned writing done today. I have gone from moving to unpacking to sick, and thus been a ghost to my friends, inlcuding offending the moving gods this morning by not helping friend move who helped me move. I apologize for my lack of presence.

The Bad:
I am the worst boss/lead game designer ever. I showed up half an hour late to a chat session about FE. Luckily my guys covered for me, but still, worse boss/lead game designer ever.

The Neither Good Nor Bad:
Moving Saturday. All help appreciated. Be at my place at 10:30 if you can come.

The Good:
Got a massive deadling expansion on Shadows of Azathoth and am throwing a good part of it out. No more focus on Earth. It's all more of a "you left Earth months ago, have no support, and have to deal with this alien planet."

Location: Blue moon Pizza in Marietta
Time: 11:30

It should be sufficiently far from any malls to avoid problems due to Black Friday. I had been looking for something more on the middle north side of town, but I know nothing about that area these days.

Also probably attending Highlander tomorrow night after turkey and awful, disgusting gravy has been devoured along with white round things (my family has a lot of Thanksgiving in jokes).

Operation Birthday this Friday

So this Friday I'm mounting a two pronged birthday assault.

Prong one: I and my girlfriend will be in Atlanta Friday morning and are aiming to do lunch with folks Friday. Would like to get this started around 11:30 to noon. Suggestions as to where appreciated. Flynn suggested sushi since he thought I still didn't eat fish but I have made my peace with sushi and find it quite tasty (though having other options for girlfriend would be good).

Prong two: After we drive back up to Raleigh some sort of dinner hanging out session with the Raleigh crew, probably at Sunset Grille or Harrisons. I'm thinking 8ish.

What I've been up to and an idea I had

So I've been up to lots of work. We hit our content complete deadline and have kept on chugging. The game is steadily improving and we're getting lots of little tweaks in now that help immensely. If anyone wants to give it a whirl with the understanding it is indeed an alpha test with no tutorial currently let me know.

Freelance writing has taken off like a shot lately. I've been doing some work for One Bad Egg, set up by Fred Hicks (of Spirit of the Century fame) and my old comrade Justin Jacobson (who runs Blue Devil Games). So far it's been lots of 4E flavor text, but it's been fun. I also did a 4E race writeup for Louis Porter Jr., but it didn't go as smoothly. On top of that I've got the big Shadows of Azathoth project for Paradigm Concepts due in a few months, and that should be way fun. It's still at the intimidating phase, but I'm making planning headway even if my wordcount isn't great.

Due to folks from the day job finding me in various places in the internet (not that I try to hide much) I've been keeping the personal chatter on here pretty low. To keep distant folks apprised I've been seeing a girl up here named Lindsay for about a year (I didn't mention it for awhile because the last woman I dated, the wonderful and intelligent chinook_wind, shares the same name and I thought it might come across as creepy) and it seems to be going well. As mentioned previously we're looking to fineagle a way to move in together despite our pets not getting along. Two weeks ago I went out to California to meet her family for her parents 40th anniversary party, and that was fun. It was odd though, as we were staying with her sister and didn't have a car of our own, so it was like living on the goodwill of her family. It just wasn't comfortable for me, and the vacation was about 3 days too long to boot. Fun overall, but if I were to do it again I would do things differently.

I came back from California to find we had skipped early fall and gone straight to late fall. The temperature change seems to have affected my mood something fierce as I have been pretty negative lately. Any display of passion or excitement for something gets sort of a "How can you get so excited about that?" from me, no matter the inspiration of the passion. Election, video games, whatever. Trying to get out of this as quickly as possible, but as aetatis has pointed out I do this pretty much every year and it lasts for a month or two.

Should be at KG next weekend. I'm going to have to spend a good part of the time on the laptop working, but should get some playtime in.

So I tend to associate songs with people, either because the song reminds me of them thematically or I experienced something of importance with that person while the song was playing. By and large their positive or at least interesting associations, and the one time I mentioned one last week to mistervimes he seemed flattered. So figured I would do a list on here. Not everyone on my friends list has a song, but I figure it's enough to make it interesting.

Basically I figure I'll list the LJ name, the song title and artist, relevant lyrics, and why.

aetatis
When I was a Boy - Dar Williams

I won't forget when Peter Pan
Came to my house, took my hand
I said I was a boy, I'm glad he didn't check
I learned to fly, I learned to fight
I lived a whole life in one night
We saved each other's lives out on the pirate's deck

And I remember that night
When I'm leaving a late night with some friends
And I hear somebody tell me it's not safe
Someone should help me
I need to find a nice man to walk me home

When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom
Climbed what I could climb upon
And I don't know how I survived
I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew
And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too

This song really just embodies what I imagine aetatis was like as a kid; all adventure and stuff in the face of a society that expects a pretty pretty princess. Also she introduced me to Dar Williams in the first place and I will always remember hearing this song for the first time on our drive from Atlanta to NYC somewhere around Maryland.

arcstone
Devil's Airship by Pinataland
I'm leaving tonight, and you're coming with me
Electric arc lamp, lighter than air
I'm feeling fine, on this devil's airship
We'll buzz this town, see what makes them tick

This song is by a band that uses fragments of audio recordings from the early 20th century as inspiration, and this one specifically is about the UFO/Airship scare of 1902. It's got sort of a melancholy steampunk vibe, which just reminded me of arcstone.

shieldhaven
What do you do with a BA in English? from Avenue Q
What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.

I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place.

But somehow I can't shake,
The feeling I might make,
A difference,
To the human race.

The answer to the eternal question, what do you do with a BA a in English has been answered for shieldhaven: you work for me.

goblinkatie
I Want to be Evil by Chiwetel Ejiofor (played the Operative in Serenity)
I wanna be evil, and trump an ace,
Just to see my partner's face.
I wanna be nasty, I wanna be cruel
I wanna be daring, I wanna shoot pool

And in the theatre
I want to change my seat
Just so I can step on
Everybody's feet

I wanna be evil, I wanna hurt flies
I wanna sing songs like the guy who cries
I wanna be horrid, I wanna drink booze
And whatever I've got I'm eager to lose

I wanna be evil, little evil me
Just as mean and evil as I can be

Originally this was peformed by Eartha Kitt, but the version I am familiar with is from the movie Kinky Boots, where Ejiofor plays a drag queen who helps a shoe factory survive by making shoes for drag queens. I can always post more if I think of them.

Places to write

Now that I have a big deadline bearing down on me I was wondering if anyone has recommendations of good places to go and write in Raleigh/Cary. My apartment has way too many distractions to do it there. I've been going to the local CiCi's Pizza but I don't think I can stomach the pizza anymore, and its not very good for me. So I'm looking for some place I can sit at for little ($10 or less) or no money for 3-5 hours that has a table and an electrical outlet. As long as people don't bother me distractions are fine; I actually like some hub bub in the background.

Any suggestions?

Odd request

First of all I love my two kitties, Ponce and Milla, very much (even if Milla can be bit spoiled).

So, long story short, the girl I've been seeing for the last year and I are thinking about moving in together. Problem is she has a Boston Terrier that is a rescue doggie whose previous abusive owner trained to kill small animals, like my cats. Our plan long term is to find a house where the dog can have the yard and some indoor space that is separated from the cat space, but right now we can't afford all the costs involved in moving to do that, plus my girlfriend has a condo that she probably would not be able to sell in the current market (but may be able to rent). My lease is up in January, so our ideal situation would be for me to move into her condo for long enough (probably six months or so) to build up savings (since my monthly expenses would go down by like $400) to move into a suitable place. Problem is her condo has no way to create a cat space and a dog space.

So, anyone (or do you know anyone) want to test drive having a cat (or 2 cats) for six months? Basically I'm hoping to find a home for the kitties for six months until we can move into a cat/dog separated space. If I can't I'll probably stay where I am and save at a far reduced rate.

Real post coming at some point. Just having a hard time getting motivated to do just about anything lately.

NERO?

So next weekend NERO Atlanta and NERO SC are having a dual event at King's Mountain. I'm toying with the idea of going since it's such a short drive (only 3 hours!) and it's a good chance to see some friends I don't see often. Any other Raleigh folks interested in going?

I personally think it would be a riot for Kieran and Crassus to show up, taking a break from being awesome in the Sea Kingdom (last time I went to NERO I popped in as Crassus and told everyone in the seven intervening years he had ditched all the angst, was happily married, and was a pirate hunter for the Sea Kingdom working for the Sea Kingdom's lead pirate hunter, Kieran Mishanter).

I will be out of town from tomorrow until the 20th. I'll be in California hopefully relaxing. I'll be checking my gmail account occasionally, but otherwise don't expect to hear from me much. Hope everyone has a good week and a half in my absence.
