Me and the not updating

I should not look at airsoft sites. Because then I see they have revolver airsoft guns, complete with having to load each cylinder individually, and I think about running a Wild West LARP, which is not what my brain needs now.

So I haven't been updating much lately, mainly because I don't feel like writing. Well, I do feel like writing sometimes, its just that between day job and Dawning Star, LJ sort of falls off the radar. But anyway, here's the short version.

[info]pleroma is staying with us for a few weeks and is now working at Icarus with me. He seems to be fitting in and he gets to sit up front with the cool kids, while I am stuck in a hall (which is sort of my fault really since I chose to stay in the hall at first because I liked the seclusion, but now the constant traffic is driving me nuts). He has gotten to see that I am not always the chipper person I am when most of you see me, i.e. at games and other social functions. Yes, in fact at home I am quite grumpy generally want to be left alone (and those damn kids to get off my lawn). I can be quite the bear to live with. And woe to he who interrupts Wednesday night's comic reading!

Work is proceeding as ever. At the day job churning out tons of NPCs and missions. At home working on small PDFs for Dawning Star. [info]technoir has done some awesome podcasts for Dawning Star in the form of an in game radion show and some of the PDFs are based off the material he came up with. He's really come up with some great stuff and given me tons of ideas to work with, so bully for him!

And so weekend before last we went to NYC. I ate pizza of the gods, and am now stuck back in this lands of chain pizza places and bad crust. Truely, it is pizza hell to have two days of the most amazing pizza, and then come back to everything else. And we visited some of our friends from NYC while there, and I saw people at DC. Good to know they still remember me, and they said I was the gold standard for job performance for my old job. So that as all warm and fuzzy. Sadly though several people I wanted to see have left the company, so much catch up with them elsewhere. Also bought way too many comics, but they did teach me an important less: when I grow up, I want to be Big Johnson Bone, ancestor of Phone Bone and crew from the Bone comics. "Stupid Stupid Rat Tales" is by far the funniest comic I've read in month.

Speaking of Bone, if you like laughing, fantasy, and comics, you need to read Bone. It's one of the best comics to come out in the last...I don't know...thirty years? You can take your Watchmen, your Dark Knight, your deconstruction, post modernism, and sexual deviancy and leave me with three little white, puffy citters from the family Bone and their accidentaly involvement in someone elses fantasy epic.

So I'm feeling creatively thin these days between the day job and freelancing. I have come to the conclusion while at some point I would love to run a sci-fi larp with airsoft guns or some such, if I tried to do it know it would suck. I just don't have the creative fu to spare, and I don't see how [info]medicine_weasel and [info]jenharts did it. Hell, having a day job alone seems enough of a strain. Honestly I think a large part of the reason I did a pretty good job on SI plot was I was in college and had the time. And now, not so much, but I have money, and I like money.

Not feeling the energy for the gaming post I had planned, so I'll do that another day.

And congratulations to the great and numerous births of late! I have been most remiss in communication my congratulations. I suck.

And lastly thanks to the folks who take pictures at games and post them on LJ. It helps me live vicariously through others. Planning on making it to the first KG 3-day, maybe SI 3-day, have to see how things go.

I am happy with the podcast. I am playing with some ideas in my head. I will have some stuff for you to look at later this week for the next podcast. It gives me a certain geeky joy to see the stuff i came up with made part of cannon in a game world i like. I like also the fact that I have something to put some of my creative energy into. The more I write the more I want to write. I have not had so much creative energy since college.

I might suggest on the scifi larp you think about, you might do what Ian did smartly. Surround yourself with briliant creative people. Then you just have to sort of guide it in a direction rather than write everything yourself.

It would be nice to see you at either si or kg. Maybe even drag your lady with you.

Glad you're enjoying the pocasting! It's been extremely cool so far.

Actually finding people to help run the scifi larp (besides aetatis, since lots of it is her idea) woulds be hard since its a concept near and dear to my heart in such a way that would be difficult for other people to get involved. It's a game with a very specific that I think would be frustrating for a lot of plotty folk.

That may be a problem. Running a larp on your own completely is an exercise in futility. The only way to do it is present your story bible to steal a notion from tv shows. Once people sign up to be plot they must agree to not break these story rules.

This is true. Running larps alone is insanity. Also the problem is locational: while we have some geeks around here, some of whom have show excellence in larp plotting previously, Raleigh is still working on developing full geek mecca-hood. Plus the issue of sites. So many issues.

February 7 2006, 15:27:08 UTC 6 years ago

Well yeah those are always issues. I hope someday you can, but any larp is going to take some work.

Being a huge deadlands fan, I think a Wild west Larp would rock the casbah! There is so much potential for cultures and creatures. The time frame is ripe for a LARP. Airsoft guns are a good idea also.

Phone Bone will be the next President! Although Groo might decide to join the libertarian party and thus slaughter the competition.

mmmm Deadlands LARP.

Only bad thing about airsoft: People having to wear eyeprotection. Such a lame costume accessory.

Holy cow -- coolest eyewear ever. Just . . . wow.

This is why I'm leaning more towards sci-fi/post apcoalyptic larps with airsoft as its easier to do cool glasses/goggles for those settings.

I still can't believe Michael Brown is a dad.

We tried loaning the Bone Bible to a Bulgarian roommate who wanted an easy read (her English is not spectacular), but she couldn't wrap her head around the fantasy concept. The major comic book in East Europe is an old fascist satire called Alan Ford; maybe it's time to loan her Usagi Yojimbo....

Maybe an English translation of Tintin?

... quiche?

Stupid, stupid user creatures. :) This is the helpdesk mantra.

I could think of all kinds of cool ways to do eye protection in a Wild West larp, especially if it were a sort of post-holocaust type Wild West. Kind of like HOE, but not quite so radioactive. Or maybe ... hmmm ... that would be way fun! You could have all kinds of stuff in that kind of game ... creativity ... flowing ... ack! :)

Re: ... quiche?

Yeah, if I were doing Wild West, that's the sort of Wild West larp I would want to do. All mutants and six shooters and stuff.

Re: ... quiche?

Hmm. I know I would go nuts if I had to wear any kind of eye covering 24/7 at a LARP. I have enough trouble remembering to wear my glasses in the morning.

Maybe they're just combat mandantory? YOu can't shoot without wearing them?

Re: ... quiche?

Basically I figure there would be "safe zones" or some such where guns don't function, such as in some buildings (like the tavern) or some such.

Re: ... quiche?

I think I saw a similar rule at another larp that used Airsoft and nerf weapons. Nerf stuff was like a ppg from Bab5 - didn't do a huge amount of damage indoors, so it couldn't blow an airlock or anything like that.

Airsoft was only valid outdoors, away from buildings, and nerf was allowed everywhere.

Re: ... quiche?

How much power is actually in the airsoft weapons? Is it worse than a spell packet? Would it be possible for people to say, I accept the risk and go without goggles.

Re: ... quiche?

Not sure, need to get an airsoft gun and run tests. Also need to find someone who actually knows how to modify the guns so I can see how hard it is to crank them down to a slower speed (preferably 150 feet per second or some such_).

Why I heart Bone

Who else but Jeff Smith does this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/188896314X/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_12/104-1499150-7791165?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

Yeah, I heart me the Bone family. Its among my all-time faves.

By the by, thanks for the Etherscope suggestion, I had someone get for me for my birthday. Looking forward to playing it soon. Speaking of which, kudos on Dawning Star. I've been reading it over and I am very pleased with what I've read so far.

By the by, next time you're in NYC, I have a list of pizza joints and bars for you to hit up.

Re: Why I heart Bone

Dear sweet god I must have that collected Bone book. Granted the new colorized versions by Scholastic are nice too. Jeff Smith was supposed to be doing a Captain Marvel series for DC but sadly it never materialized. If anyone could do a great Captain Marvel, its Jeff Smith.

Glad you liked the suggestions and Dawning Star!

Always up for trying more pizza in NYC. I have a good list of places I like to go, but more is always good.

Re: Why I heart Bone

My older brother used to live on 44th and 9th, so I know a lot of great pizza joints in the Times Square and Broadway area.

Anyhow, the One-Volume piece is great. Especially for preaching the good word of Smith to the masses.

Man, a Smith Captain Marvel would be awesome! I hope it happens.

I'm not exactly sure how either... or how I still am. I've been pretty well burnt out for a while, but I've started to get excited again.
